Only three days after winning the bronze medal in the 2018 South American Club Championship, Montes Claros ensured stay in the Brazilian top division for the next season. They beat title contenders Sesc on the road by a 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 25-19) to isolate themselves at No.10 (Superliga consists of 12 clubs, two last-placed sides will be relegated) with 16 points, which is eight points more compared to the nearest followers in the battle for a “survival” in Superliga, JF Vôlei.
Interestingly, Montes Claros scored a win against Sesc by playing with a well-modified team, while their rivals appeared on the court with their best options.
Alexander Marczewski „Alemão“ topped Montes Claros with 25 points, while Cuban Isbel Mesa made 85% attack (11/13, blocked once). In Sesc, who remained the second-placed behind Sada Cruzeiro (two points less and one game more played compared to them), Maurício Borges and Renan Buiatti (5 kill blocks) scored 15 points apiece. Lévi Cabral recorded 77% reception (13 digs).
