Tonight, Turkey’s VakıfBank İstanbul joined 3 other teams that secured their playoff berths in the 2022 CEV Women’s Volleyball Champions League yesterday.
The CEV Champions League Volley 2022 | Women’s 5th round of the group stage came to a close tonight with 4 matches. The encounter between Vero Volley Monza and VakıfBank İstanbul, the vice-champions in the 2021 edition, in Italy was the highlight of the day. The Turkish side once again demonstrated its strength by winning 3-1 and remained unbeaten. The Swede Isabelle Haak was outstanding with 32 points for VakıfBank. American Michelle Bartsch-Hackley made 71% reception (21 digs, 43% excellent), while her compatriot Chiaka Ogbogu had 77% attack (10/13). The victory has earned VakıfBank a place in the quarter-finals as the Pool B winner (15 points). Monza (9 points) will have the chance to secure their slot in the playoffs as one of the best 3 runners-up in the last round.
Lokomotiv Kaliningrad Region won a critical match over Ukraine’s SC Prometey Dnipro with a score of 3-1 in Pool A. The match took place on a neutral court in Istanbul (Turkey) with Prometey being nominal hosts. It was a game of many twists and turns, but the Russian champions completed their mission and returned home with 3 important points, keeping them in contention for a place in the quarter-finals (10 points).
In Pool E, Grupa Azoty Chemik Police won in straight sets over Hungary’s Fatum Nyíregyháza. The Polish titleholders still have a chance to not only advance to the next round but also to win the pool. The No.1 in the standings will be decided by a direct match between Chemik and Italy’s A.Carraro Imoco Conegliano (who have already qualified for the next round along with 2 other teams yesterday) in Round 6.
