The Dominican Republic beat Russia for the first time in the world-level competition. This victory came in Brasília, Brazil, on Day 1 of the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League Preliminary Round, Pool 3.
Driven by Brayelin Martínez, who poured in 24 points, the Dominican Republic won by a 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 28-26), making the biggest upset in the opening day of the tournament. Cándida Arias made 5 kill blocks for the Dominican Republic. The players of the Caribbean side felt like playing at home as they were supported by the Brazilian fans at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium. As for Russia, their most productive player on the court was Margarita Kurilo with 22 points.
It is noteworthy that Russia had as much as nine debutants in the senior list, of which four made their first national team appearance in the competition under the FIVB. There have never been so many debutants at once in Russia Women’s national team history.

As for China, whose executive head coach An Jiajie did not take players like Zhu Ting and Li Yingying to this opening stage of the Nations League, Liu Yanhan scored 11 points, coming from the bench.
