Germany scored their first win in the 2019 Nations League after suffering all three defeats in the first week. On Day 1 of the second week, the German ladies out-blocked Russia (11-3) in Pool 6, in Ankara, Turkey, to win in straight sets. Jana-Franziska Poll and Louisa Lippmann contributed to a convincing performance of Germany with 12 points apiece but a blocking display of Lisa Gründing was probably the x-factor for the winning side as she set up 6 kill blocks. Margarita Kurilo scored 13 points for Russia, who are at 1-3 in the tournament.
It was a gloomy afternoon for the Turkish fans at the Başkent hall in the country’s capital of Ankara as Japan surprisingly beat Turkey by a 3-0. How Giovanni Guidetti’s players were powerless against Japan shows the fact that they did not serve a single ace in the entire match. Ai Kurogo notched 20 points for Japan who inflicted the first defeat to Turkey in the tournament. Yuki Ishii made 4 kill blocks. Zehra Güneş scored 17 points for the losing side.
