The USA have beaten current world champions Serbia in Pool 5 in Conegliano, Italy, by a 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21) having a chance to become the only unbeaten side in the tournament after four games played. The U.S. team continued to compete in the 2019 Nations League without several experienced players (Larson, Lloyd, Adams, Lowe…) but Serbia also played this game, and will the entire Week 2, without key players like Bošković, Mihajlović, Veljković, etc. They all played Week 1, which Serbia finished with a 2-1 record. Andrea Drews top-scored for the USA with 22 points, while Haleigh Washington made 5 kill blocks and served 5 aces. Actually, as a team, USA dominated in the block by holding a 16-2 margin. Ana Bjelica scored 12 points for Serbia.
At the end of the match between Italy and the Dominican Republic, it is clear that there will be two teams with a perfect record after four games, both competing in the same pool on the second week. The „Azzurri“, strengthened by several players compared to Week 1, probably due to the fact that they host the pool, defeated the Dominican Republic in four sets, not allowing the Caribbean side to make the third big upset in the tournament after previously downing Russia and Brazil. Italy played on home soil for the first time in nearly a year (after the 2018 FIVB World Championship). The tie-break seemed inevitable as the Dominican Republic had a 12-7 in the fourth set, but Italy head coach Davide Mazzanti put Paola Egonu in and the 2019 CEV Champions League MVP changed the course of the set and brought the match to her team. Indre Sorokaite was the top scorer for the winning side with 17 points (4 aces). Brayelin Martínez scored 19 for the Dominicans, while Lisvel Eve set up 5 kill blocks.
