VNL 2019 W: Poland gain upper hand in booking last vacant Final Six spot

Poland made a huge step in clinching the last vacant Final Six spot for the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League. Earlier, national teams of Italy, Turkey, Brazil, and the USA booked their tickets, plus the hosts China.

Pool 20 in Boryeong, South Korea, will be the most interesting pool to watch in the final week, Week 5, of the 2019 VNL as three out four teams competing in it have the chance to clinch the last vacant spot for the 2019 VNL Finals in Nanjing (China).

Poland gained an upper hand in this fight as they beat direct rivals Japan by a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 22-25), coming back from a five-point deficit (3-8) in the opening set.

After not standing out in the previous week of the tournament, the top scorer of both Poland and 2019 VNL (329 points) Malwina Smarzek recorded another 30+ display (31 points). Yuki Ishii scored 21 for Japan.

Besides Poland (8-5; 24 points) and Japan (7-6; 21 points), the Dominican Republic also have a chance of reaching the Final Six from this pool.

The Caribbean side beat Pool 20 hosts South Korea (1-12; 3 points) in four sets and got a 7-6 record and 18 points. This was Korea’s ninth successive defeat in the tournament.

Bethania de la Cruz led Dominican scorers with 17 points, while Jineiry Martínez made 4 kill blocks. Kim Hee-Jin tallied 21 points for the Asian side, including 4 aces.

Pool 20 (Boryeong, South Korea):

Japan – Poland 1-3 (23-25, 23-25, 25-19, 22-25)

South Korea – Dominican Republic 1-3 (19-25, 25-20, 24-26, 28-30)
