Both Italy and Japan are through to the final of the U20 World Championship after prevailing in tie-breaks in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
Italy staged a superb comeback from a 2-set deficit against Turkey: 3-2 (19-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-16, 18-16). Turkish players will definitely remember the way they have lost the match for a long time as they did not only fail to convert the lead in sets of 2-0 but also squandered 2 match points in the tie-break (14-12). Fatim Kone of Club Italia Crai, who got relegated to Division 2 at the end fo the last season in the Italian Championship, top-scored for the “Azzurrine“ with 18 points (5 kill blocks). Marina Lubian, a new player of Savino Del Bene Scandicci, served 5 aces. Derya Cebecioğlu, a member of the country’s top division newcomers Altınbaş Üniversitesi Yeşilyurt, made 19 points (4 kill blocks), while VakıfBank youth team setter Nazlı Eda Kafkas served 5 aces.
Japan is the other gold medal match contestant. The only undefeated side in the tournament (7-0) overcame Russia by a 3-2 (18-25, 26-24, 25-13, 18-25, 15-12) thanks to 20 points (including 5 kill blocks) by NEC Red Rockets outside hitter Haruna Soga. Yuliya Brovkina, the member of Lokomotiv Kaliningrad region, tallied 19 points (4 kill blocks), while Viktoriya Pushina from the country’s Division 2 side Severyanka Cherepovets, set up 5 kill blocks.
