Russia barely avoided an upset against the hosts Japan on Day 2 of the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup, held in six cities. Unlike previous years, the World Cup is not a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games. The results of the World Cup will only give the participating national teams points for the FIVB rankings.

Russia struggled to outplay the World Cup hosts Japan in the second round.

The “Zbornaya“ needed five sets to break the resistance of the rivals and reach a 2-0 record. Japan, driven by Yuki Ishii (27 points) and the new rising star Mayu Ishikawa, the MVP of the FIVB U20 World Championship and Asian senior Championship Mayu Ishikawa (20 points), and supported by nearly 12,000 fans at Yokohama Arena, took the lead in sets of a 2-1 but failed to go all the way: 3-2 (25-11, 23-25, 25-27, 25-19, 15-7). Nataliya Goncharova tallied 31 points for Russia, while Irina Koroleva made 6 of the team’s 17 kill blocks.

The two-time successive FIVB Nations League winners, the United States, recovered from a set down against the back-to-back European champions Serbia, in Hamamatsu, to record their second win in as many games.

The key moment occurred in the second set when Karsta Lowe replaced Andrea Drews, finishing the match as her team’s top scorer (18 points). The USA dominated the block (15-5) with Haleigh Washington setting up 6 of them. Ana Bjelica scored 19 points for Serbia who are at 0-2.

Besides Russia and the USA, the national teams of the Netherlands, China and Brazil remained undefeated sides in the tournament after two rounds.
