Serbia ‘spoiled’ what was supposed to be a big derby against Italy in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s volleyball tournament, demolishing the rival in straight sets.
Serbia looked like a punitive expedition against Italy in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s volleyball tournament. The world and European champion demonstrated all its strength on Italy, who remained completely helpless: 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-21).
Many expected a marathon fight, five sets, something similar to what these two teams staged in the last FIVB World Championship final, but it didn’t happen. All eyes were on the presumed attacking war of the world’s two best opposite hitters, Tijana Bošković and Paola Egonu. However, the latter disappointed, making only 4.4 % attacking efficiency (15/45; 13 errors)! Still, she finished the match as the top scorer for ‘Azzurrine’ with 16 points. On the other hand, Bošković tallied 24 points through a 30 % attack (21/40; 9 errors).
In the semifinals, Serbia will face the United States, which will a replay from Rio 2016.
