Brazil turned the match against the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) around and went to the semifinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s volleyball tournament.
It took Brazil a lot more than patience to overcome the ROC in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s volleyball tournament. After the first set, when nothing seemed to go right for Brazil, two decisions of its head coach José Roberto Guimarães ‘Zé Roberto’ changed the course of the encounter. By sending in setter Macris Carneiro (who missed the last couple of matches due to ankle injury) and opposite hitter Rosamaria Mintibeller instead of Roberta Ratzke and Tandara Caixeta, he gave a new rhythm to his team. Under the on-court guidance of the duo, ‘Seleção’ secured a place in the Olympic semifinals: 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22).
Gabriela Guimarães ‘Gabi’ top-scored Brazil with 18 points and had 75 % reception (22/25; 1 error), finishing the match as one of the five players in double digits on the scoreboard on the winning side. Rosamaria made 6 blocks. Arina Fedorovtseva put down 20 points for ‘Zbornaya’, while Irina Koroleva set up 6 blocks.
Brazil will face South Korea in the semifinals.
