Today in Rotterdam, the top-ranked team in the Women’s FIVB Rankings, Brazil, put an end to the Dutch hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the World Championship 2022, which they would play in front of their own crowd. The South Americans defeated the ’Oranje’ in three sets (25-19, 25-19, and 25-20) in Pool E and put a stamp on their own place in the playoffs. In its match against the Netherlands, the national team of Brazil achieved a significant World Championship milestone as it won its 100th match overall since making its debut in 1956. They have played 149 games.

The Brazilian triumph included Gabriela ’Gabi’ Guimarães’ 19 points and Ana Carolina ’Carol’ Silva’s 9 blocks. Nika Daalderop, an outside hitter on the losing side, finished the game with 11 points and Juliet Lohuis, a middle blocker, provided 4 stuffs.

Earlier today, Japan overcame Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-21), while Italy, the defending champions of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League and the CEV European Championship, defeated Argentina in straight sets as well. The ’Azzurre’ currently have seven victories and 22 points, making them the first Pool E team with a guaranteed spot in the quarter-finals. Brazil (seven victories, 20 points), Japan (six victories, 18 points), China (six victories, 17 points), and Belgium (five wins, 15 points) are vying for the remaining three positions.

Impeccable Serbia (who qualified for the quarter-finals in the previous round) won their eighth game in the title defense campaign. In Pool F in Łódź, Thailand was defeated by the reigning world champions, who performed with a combined line-up and remained unbeaten as the only side possessing such a status. Serbia was led by Ana Bjelica (15 points) in downing the Asians, who said goodbye to their top 8 hopes and resumed being atop the pool with 23 points and an 8-0 win-loss record.

By beating Turkey in the big game, the United States broke their rival’s six-game winning streak, but despite the defeat, Giovanni Guidetti’s ladies secured a slot in the quarter-finals, too. Canada’s inability to prevail in the match against Poland helped Turkey avoid playing a do-or-die last-round match against Serbia. So, the USA and Turkey became the third and fourth teams to secure berths in the playoffs.

Thanks to the team’s 20 blocks, Poland prevailed over Canada in a thriller that left North Americans with little chance of going to the quarter-finals. Magdalena Stysiak top-scored for Poland, who’s fourth in the Pool F charts at 5-3 and 15 points, just behind Turkey (6-2; 17 points), with 25 points, including 5 blocks. Her teammates, Kamila Witkowska and Agnieszka Korneluk, set up 6 blocks apiece. Kiera Van Ryk put down 21 points for Canada.

Beating Germany in four sets, the Dominican Republic broke its three-game losing streak and kept chasing the playoff slot, which can’t be said for the ’Butterflies’.
