Japan emerged as the standout performer in the opening week of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2025, finishing their Ottawa campaign undefeated and without dropping a single set. The reigning silver medalists won all four of their matches in straight sets, collecting a perfect 12 points to lead the standings after Week 1.
Their latest triumph came in dominant fashion against the Dominican Republic, cruising to a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-21, 25-9). With a clinical display, the Japanese squad showed why they are considered top contenders for this year’s title.
Star outside hitter and newly-appointed captain Mayu Ishikawa led from the front with a stellar 20-point performance, while teammate Yoshino Sato added 19 points to seal the win. “We’re finding our rhythm and our system is working. This gives us a strong push heading into Week 2,” said middle blocker Airi Miyabe.
Thanks to their flawless showing, Japan not only topped the standings with 12 points—one more than second-placed Italy—but also gained over 26 FIVB World Ranking points, jumping from seventh to fifth globally.
The Dominican Republic, now 11th with two wins out of four, saw veteran Gaila González lead their scoring with 14 points.
