Italy claimed the top spot in women’s junior volleyball, defeating Japan in a five-set classic to win the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship. The thrilling 3-2 victory (25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 25-19, 15-11) delivered Italy their third world title.
Italy’s outside hitter Merit Adigwe led the charge with an outstanding 34-point performance, while Linda Manfredini’s final spike sealed the championship. Italy’s powerful blocking turned the tide in the deciding set, shutting down Japan’s fast-paced attack.
“It feels amazing. We stayed united until the end, and our goal was always the gold medal,” said Adigwe after the match.
For Japan, it was another bittersweet silver, adding to their consistent record of podium finishes. Anna Uemura (18 pts) and Sae Omori (17 pts) led their scoring, but the Italians’ resilience proved too much in the tiebreak.
Meanwhile, Brazil secured back-to-back bronze medals, overpowering Bulgaria 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 14-25, 25-21). Rebeca Borges Viana (24 pts) and Helena Wenk Hoengen (23 pts) ensured the South Americans’ fourth-ever podium finish.
This year’s tournament also saw China edge Poland for fifth, Argentina clinch seventh with a serving masterclass, and the USA finish ninth with a clean sweep over Czechia. Croatia, Korea, and Puerto Rico also closed their campaigns with hard-fought victories in their respective placement matches.
