The United States became the first team to book a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship after defeating Argentina 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-12, 25-17) in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Led by Dana Rettke (15 points) and Chiaka Ogbogu (14 points), the Americans dominated at the net, outscoring Argentina in blocks 15-6. Outside hitters Sarah Franklin and Avery Skinner also shined with 15 and 13 points. Despite a strong 29-point effort from Argentina’s Bianca Cugno, the U.S. proved too strong and now sit top of Pool D with six points.
Earlier in the day, Czechia pulled off a stunning comeback, overturning a two-set deficit to beat Slovenia 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-13). On the birthday of their coach Ioannis Athanasopoulos, the Czechs fought back with spirited blocking and clutch plays, sealing the win on a dramatic tie-break. Monika Brancuska led the way with 24 points, while Slovenia’s Fatoumatta Sillah impressed with 23.
With two rounds played, the U.S. are already through to the knockouts, while Argentina (3 points), and Czechia (2) will battle for the remaining Pool D slot in the Round of 16. Slovenia’s chances of advancing to the next round are very slim.
