„Lube are grateful to the head coach Giampaolo Medei for the work that he did in this year and a half of cooperation. We appreciate his professionalism and courage,“ reports the official website of the team.
Lube have already started searching for a new solution. Two names are in the spotlight – Mauro Berruto and Slobodan Kovac.
In the upcoming days, we will find out more.
Recall that yesterday’s defeat against Milano was probably the trigger for Medei to make such decision.

Unfortunately, this was expected. I was surprised this hasn’t happened after last season and 5 lost finals. It’s always a coach that pays the price since it is easier to fire a coach vs the whole team.
It was the same in Perugia at the beginning of last season, when Atanasijevic was injured and didn’t play so Perugia lost few games in the row. Sirci immediately fired Kovac, who made that team and save them previous season and brought Bernardi. Coincidentally Atanasijevic recovered at the same time and Perugia started winning. And glory goes to Bernardi 🙂
I love Lube but they simply have too many good players on the team and they need a coach who is a good psychologist. After losing 6 finals, they have a serious problem.
After their game vs Zenit, when they saved 8 match points, I expected them to walk over Trentino in finals. But they were nowhere to be found.
Lubre fired Christensen to bring Bruno, which was the mistake in my opinion. Christensen was the soul of that team after playing so many years for Lube.
They did an unfair thing to Sada by bringing Simon who was under contract with Sada. They brought Leal as well. He is a great player but he doesn’t fit into already established attack formation with Sokolov as 1st attack option and Juantorena as 2nd.
Juantorena is 33 so he should have been replaced with Leal who is 29 if that is a long-term strategy.
But what hurt Lube the most is the fact they lost Grebennikov, who is the best libero in the world. Not sure what happened here, but Lube couldn’t find a proper replacement and that is where their defense has a problem.
I agree with almost all you said. But the thing with grebennikov is much more difficult. Grebennikov is French and Lube desperately needed one italian libero to make space for Leal. They chose good, but this guy played before for Padova (if I am not wrong) without any pressure to win.
Leal is still making his adaptation in Europe, so he is first a great spiker and expcional server, but in defense he needs improve a little bit more….so in this scenario Juantorena and the libero will be with more busy…..Sander was in the top five of the best statts in at least four or five topics in the last world championship in Italy/ Bulgary…I prefer micah than Bruno (even i am brazillian…..) Bruno has no ability to change a game….he plays the same way losing or winning…Willian is the best of Brazil but it’s another history…Simon and Stankovic are the best…so i humbly think that there’s too much attack but not so much defense/ pass that Lube will need….I see Leal or Juantorena giving way to a better pass player instead of both on the same team….maybe a rooster between them…there’s a gap in the pass …..they need a more complete player as Russel, Sander, Anderson, Rossard, Volkov, Leal will get there! but he needs more time……
