They have managed to win the gold medal after beating Russia in the finals 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18).
The ‘Azzurri’ wrapped up the competition undefeated with an 8-0 record, 22 years after their previous (and only other) success in the competition when Italy beat Greece for gold in 1997 in Tehran.
After losing to Iran in the previous edition of the World Championship for boys U19, Russia failed again in this year’s edition since Italy were better in four sets.
After two sets, the game was tied but in another two, Italy simply smashed the rival to win the championship.
Alessandro Michieletto was top scorer of the game with 20 points for Italy, as his teammate Stefani added another 18. Ilya Kazachenkov was Russia’s best scorer with 16.
Italy’s attacking efficiency of 49% (50/102) was vastly superior to Russia’s 37% (36/97).
