An 18-year-old Cuban outside hitter Melissa Vargas, who can also play as an opposite, was banned by her native federation to compete both nationally and internationally in the next four years! It was an extension of her existing one-year ban which was set because of a conflict between her parents and the federation regarding the course of the treatment of her injury. This means Vargas will definitely miss the 2018 FIVB World Championship.

Vargas is considered one of the greatest prospects of the world volleyball at the moment. She made her debut for the senior Cuba national team when she was only 13, in 2013, and already started to shine. She was the best scorer in the 2014 Panamerican Cup and the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games. A year later, she signed her first professional contract abroad, reinforcing the Czech side VK Prostějov.

Vargas suffered a shoulder injury and underwent the surgery at the end of 2016. And everything has gone wrong for her since then…
