Ukraine, the Netherlands and Poland all scored 3:0 wins in the opening day to claim the provisional leadership in the group. Even though the final score was quite clear, still the Netherlands and Austria contributed a very interesting game (25-19, 25-16, and 27-25) where the “Oranjes” stood out in the key moments. The home heroines of Ukraine needed only 54 minutes to down their guests from England (25-12, 25-13, and 25-11) after what looked like a real show of strength by the girls mentored by Boguslav Galytskiy. The hosts were emulated by their neighbors from Poland who needed just ten minutes more to down Latvia in straight sets (25-15, 25-9, and 25-16).
A special opening ceremony attended by the Head of the Volyn Region State Administration, Borys Klimchuk, preceded the start of the competition. Mr. Klimchuk joined members of the organizing committee to present all players, officials and referees with souvenirs displaying the official logo of the European Championship. He sincerely wished a pleasant stay in the Volyn Region as well as good matches accompanied by a spirit of fair-play and sportsmanship.
