The Romanian Women’s Volleyball Championship runners-up CSM București were suspended by European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) for three years.

The downfall of former Romanian champions CSM București continued with a new episode. The 2019 national league winners, who got shut down this summer due to financial difficulties, were fined and disqualified by the CEV from European competitions for not complying with the commitments which they made – the participation in the CEV Cup this season. The team based in the Romanian capital and headed by its mayor Gabriela Firea had registered for the second strongest continental club tournament, sending a letter of guarantee, but by the time the registration became official, they already had problems to close the financial construction for the 2019/20 season.

Firstly, CSM București’s management decided to move to Division 2 and play with players from the youth team but, later, they abandoned the idea and completely suspended the senior team’s activities. The CEV sanctions will not impact the club at the moment, knowing that it does not exist in senior competition, but in case it re-establishes its activities in the next couple of years, they will be banned to play European cups (of course, if they qualify). The place of CSM București in the Romanian top division for the ongoing season was taken by CSO Voluntari 2005, who came in fourth in Division 2 in the 2018/19.

CSM București female team was founded in 2007, and until shutting down, it managed to win the championship title and Cup in 2018 and the CEV Challenge Cup in 2016. Some big names of the world volleyball defended the colors of this club such as Serbs Jovana Brakočević-Canzian and Suzana Ćebić and Dutch Maret Balkestein-Grothues.
