Croatian national team setter Karla Antunović, 22, is making waves in her first season abroad, playing for German powerhouse SSC Palmberg Schwerin. After leading Mladost to a championship title back home, she initially signed with Potsdam but moved to Schwerin when the team needed a quick replacement for an injured player.
“It worked out perfectly for me,” Karla shared. “I’m playing for a top club, competing in the Champions League, and getting incredible experience—it’s more than I could have hoped for.”
Schwerin is one of the Bundesliga’s best, currently sitting third in the league. While their Champions League journey ends in the group stage, they’ll continue competing in the CEV Cup.
Karla’s personal journey has been just as rewarding. “The league here is so much stronger than at home, and my teammates are incredible. We’re an international mix with great chemistry, and the competition within the team pushes me to improve every day.”
While she misses playing alongside her best friend, Andrea Mihaljević, she’s found a connection with Schwerin’s opposite hitter, who reminds her of Andrea. “We clicked right away and make a great duo on the court,” she said.
As she adjusts to life in northern Germany, Karla is embracing the challenge and growth her new environment offers. “The club is so well-organized, and we have everything we need to train and perform at the highest level. I’m so grateful for this opportunity.”
With a strong first season under her belt, Karla is already looking ahead to summer and contributing to Croatia’s national team. For now, though, she’s focused on making the most of her time in Schwerin.
