A 22-year-old Nicholas Sighinolfi came to Maaseik from Italian Division 2 team that earned promotion to Serie A1 next season, BCC Castellana Grotte.
Sighinolfi is the player under the contract with Azimut Modena, where he gained volleyball “education” and was occasionally a member of a senior roster in 2014/15 and 2015/2016.
Earlier, Maaseik strengthened their squad with Estonian middle blocker Timo Tammemaa (Spacer’s Toulouse, France), setter Stef van Heyste (Callant Antwerp), opposite Jolan Cox (Callant Antwerp), Slovenian middle blocker Dane Mijatović (Salonit Anhovo, Slovenia), Chilean opposite Sebastián Gevert (VK Jihostroj České Budějovice, Czech Republic) and Canadian setter Jay Blankenau (SWD Powervolleys Düren, Germany), while British Joel Banks has been promoted from assistant to head coach.
As for departures, these player are no longer members of Maaseik: Dutch middle blocker Rob Bontje (AVOC Achel, Division 2), middle blocker Martijn Colson (Lindemans Aalst), Spaniard Alejandro Vigil González (name of the club yet unknown), Slovakian setter Branislav Skladaný (VK Prievidza, Slovakia), Polish setter Nikodem Wolański (Stal AZS PWSZ Nysa, Division 2, Poland), Norwegian receiver Anders Mol (turned to beach volleyball due to lung problems – his both lungs collapsed one by one during last season) and Argentinian libero Facundo Santucci (Vôlei Brasil Kirin/Campinas, Brazil). Argentinian coach Daniel Castellani took over Brazilian silver medalists Funvic Taubaté.
