In a friendly match in Zielona Góra, the hosts Poland came back from two sets down against Germany. These two sides “broke the ice” when it comes to men’s international matches during the coronavirus pandemic. This encounter occurred nearly a month after Poland and the Czech Republic played the first women’s match of national teams since the beginning of the pandemic.

Poland and Germany faced each other without the presence of the audience, which was replaced by about 150 cardboard avatars, and with numerous sanitary restrictions, such as the obligation to wear masks for everyone except players and coaches. The visiting team couldn’t count on the setter Lukas Kampa, who’s on rehabilitation after shoulder surgery. As for Poland, injuries excluded Mateusz Bieniek, who has undergone knee surgery, and Jakub Kochanowski, who had shoulder pains.

Speaking of the match itself, Poland’s head coach Vital Heynen started with his second lineup which played the first two sets after which Germany took a 2-0 lead. But, when he sent Bartosz Kurek, Wilfredo León, and Bartosz Bednorz in before the third set, the match completely went into the favor of the home team. The next duel between Poland Germany is scheduled for tomorrow.
