When Chemik Police lost to Italian side Liu Jo Nordmeccanica Modena in the last match of a pool stage in the 2017 Women’s Volleyball CEV Champions League, they left their country and also one of the strongest national leagues in the world – OrlenLiga – without entrants in the Playoffs 6.
So, when was the last time Poland remained without representatives in the knockout stage of the most elite club competition in Europe?
We dug deeply into statistics on the CEV website and saw the last time this happened was in the season 2005/2006 when Calisia Kalisz, the only Polish team in the Champions League at the time, did not advance to the playoffs. It means that, this season, Poland does not have its representatives in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time in 11 years. Besides Chemik Police, other team that did no manage to qualify to the Playoffs 6 in 2016/2017 was Tauron Dąbrowa Górnicza.
In addition, as sportowefakty.wp.pl published, the average number of spectators in OrlenLiga is less than 1,119 people per game this season and it’s one of the worse in the last few years. Of all teams in OrlenLiga, Polski Cukier Muszynianka have the lowest attendance average per game, 545 people, while Budowlani Łódź have the highest, 2,274 people.
