The All-Russian Volleyball Federation (VFV) banned Zenit Saint-Petersburg from continuing to compete in the ongoing men’s volleyball Cup.

One of the favorites to win the 2020 Kubok Rossii, Zenit St. Petersburg, has been banned by the VFV to participate in the competition. This decision was made due to the illness of some of the players of the team coached by Tuomas Sammelvuo. The Zenit delegation left Moscow, one of the three cities (the other two are Ufa and Krasnoyarsk) that hosts the preliminary round of the Russian Cup, and returned to St. Petersburg.

The further fate of this stage of the competition will be determined when the VFV receives the test results for COVID-19 of all volleyball players and coaches of the five clubs participating in the tournament (Zone 2) in Moscow. For now, the matches will continue, but without Zenit, who played two matches prior to receiving the ban and lost to Fakel and Dinamo Moscow. One of the reasons for such a bad performance of the St. Petersburg side is the unavailability of several players to help their team in these matches.

Namely, upon arrival in Moscow, a group of Zenit players felt unwell. They developed symptoms of SARS after which they were isolated and didn’t take part in the games. After the encounter against Dinamo Moscow, yesterday, a few more Zenit players reported health problems. The tests for COVID-19 of the players of the St. Petersburg club are still negative, but the organizers decided not to risk anything.

Speaking of today’s matches of the 2020 Russian Cup, there were no surprises. After Day 3, three teams have a perfect record: Kuzbass in Zone 1, Dinamo Moscow in Zone 2, and Zenit-Kazan in Zone 3.
