The fifth round of the Men’s Russian Volleyball Championship kicked off today in Yaroslavl, where Zenit Kazan claimed a commanding 3–0 victory over Yaroslavich (25:22, 25:20, 25:17).
Despite the home crowd’s support, Yaroslavich couldn’t maintain consistency throughout the sets. Early exchanges were even, but powerful serves from Mikhail Labinskii and solid blocks by Andrey Surmachevskiy shifted the momentum toward Kazan. Labinskii led the scorers with 14 points, while Surmachevskiy added 13 and four key blocks.
For Yaroslavich, Stanislav Kassel stood out with two aces, two blocks, and a 60% attack rate. However, the team struggled to convert crucial moments into points, often faltering under Zenit’s pressure.
After the match, Zenit’s setter Mikhail Vyshnikov admitted the team’s initial nerves:
“We came here for three points, but after watching Yaroslavich play so passionately, we knew it wouldn’t be easy. The new venue also took some adjustment,” he said.
Yaroslavich’s outside hitter Pavel Shustrov reflected on the team’s mental game:
“We didn’t lose because of skill but because of focus. Emotionally, we lacked the spark to push through one or two sets that could have changed everything.”
Zenit’s head coach Alexey Verbov praised the win but noted room for improvement:
“It’s great to see a clean 3–0 win, but we made too many errors. We rotated players today to give everyone court time — that was the main task.”
Meanwhile, Yaroslavich’s coach Sergey Shlyapnikov pointed to the difference in class:
“We faced a team of a different level. Our players are growing, but we still have a lot to work on, especially in finishing plays and maintaining consistency.”
The championship continues this weekend, with matches including Dynamo-Ural vs. Belogorie, Lokomotiv vs. Gazprom-Yugra, and Dynamo Moscow vs. Zenit St. Petersburg.
As the season progresses, the top four teams will advance directly to the quarterfinals, while the next eight will battle in additional playoff rounds.
