Tours VB from France provided tough resistance to Belogorie Belgorod in the second leg of the CEV Champions League Playoffs 12, even managed to win, but it was in vain. The Russian favorites took two sets which was quite enough for them to qualify for the Playoffs 6, 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 13-15) after 3-0 in the first leg.

Belogorie vs. Tours

Belogorie established dominance in opening set (8-5), but succumbed to highly motivated guests who were breathing down their neck. Despite trailing 21-19, Tours made 6-2 run afterwards to claim Set 1 (25-23). Duo Castard White was the most deserving for scaring the Russian runners-up. Roman Danilov did not have sufficient support in offense in the first set. Sergey Tetyukhin was not on a recognizable level (36% of excellent attack after Set 1 and Set 2), while Dmitriy Muserskiy was slowly waking up in the finish of Set 1.

The second set was a different story for Belogorie. It was the impression they could end it without drama after taking 20-16 lead, but allowed Tours to approach to 20-18. That is when Belogorie speeded things up and finished with 25-22.

It gave the wings to the Russian side which demolished opponents in Set 3 despite ending it ’only’ with a 5-point gap (25-20). At 10-10, Belogorie created a decisive 5-0 run having even a 7-point advantage 21-14. Marko Ivović joined Danilov in attack while libero Roman Martynyuk had impressive 74% of positive reception after three sets. At this point, Russian runners-up secured Playoffs 6 spot.

As expected, Belogorie’s coach Gennadiy Shipulin rested key players Muserskiy, Tetyukhin, Ivović, but left his best player today, Danilov, on the court. So, he continued dominating (23 points overall), but it cannot be said for the rest of the Russian team. French title holders took advantage of mixed Belogorie’s roster to easily take Set 4 (25-17). Their coach Vital Heynen left entire line-up trying to boost self-esteem of each player for upcoming obligations in domestic championship.

As for the tie-break, Heynen’s side had 9-6, Belogorie responded with 4-0 run (10-9), but Tours wanted to win so much 15-13. Their player Ludovic Castard collected 21 points.
