Because of the consequences of the devastating Hurricane Maria on the entire nation, the Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation (FPV) had no other choice but to cancel the Men’s championship that was underway.

Despite making a lot of efforts to preserve the possibility of competing in the 2017/18 Puerto Rican Men’s Volleyball Championship Liga de Voleibol Superior Masculina, which set off six days before the Hurrican Maria struck the country, the FPV President Dr. César Trabanco announced that the organization was unable to continue doing so.

Thus, the FPV decided to cancel the 2018 season (second part of the season) after two weeks of playing. Of course, if the circumstances improve, the governing body of the Puerto Rican Federation will meet and discuss the possibilities of resuming the competition.

At the moment of a cancellation of the LVSM, Gigantes de Carolina and Capitanes de Arecibo were at the top of the rankings with 2-0. The defending champions Mets de Guaynabo are the third with 1-1. Besides these three sides, four more clubs took part in the championship this season: Gigantes de Adjuntas, Changos de NaranjitoCafeteros de Yauco and Indios de Mayagüez, by the order in the rankings.

Hurricane Maria is regarded as the worst-ever recorded natural disaster in Dominica that caused catastrophic damage to the infrastructure and a major humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico. Maria made a landfall on Dominica on Monday, September 18 with an estimated maximum wind speed of 160 mph (257.5 km/h) before striking southeastern Puerto Rico, near Yabucoa, on September 20.
