The 10-time Russian champions Zenit Kazan announced the hiring of a current CEV Champions League winner Sokolov for the next season, making the transfer, that has raised incredible attention in the volleyball world, official.

A 29-year-old Bulgaria national team member brings to Zenit Kazan a lot of experience in playing with top-level European clubs. In terms of the number of medals in the CEV Champions League (7), he is second only to Osmany Juantorena and Maksim Mikhailov (8 each). It is precisely the position of Mikhailov that Sokolov should take in the Kazan team, whereas Mikhailov will play as an outside hitter next season.

Last season, Sokolov helped the Italian side Cucine Lube Civitanova win the national championship and the CEV Champions League, in whose final Sokolov was involved in beating his future team. It was Sokolov’s third CEV Champions League gold medal (2010 and 2011 with Itas Trentino, and 2019 with Cucine Lube Civitanova). “Tsetso” also claimed the title in the FIVB Club World Championship three times (all with Itas Trentino), Italian Championship three times (once with Itas Trentino and twice with Cucine Lube Civitanova), Turkish Championship one time (Halkbank), Italian Cup three times (twice with Itas Trentino and once with Cucine Lube Civitanova, Turkish Cup one time (Halkbank), and Turkish Super Cup two times (all with Halkbank).

Individually, Sokolov was named Best Opposite Hitter in the 2013 FIVB World League, FIVB Club World Championship two times (2013, 2017), and CEV Champions League one time (2018).

In addition to “Tsetso”, Zenit Kazan engaged an outside hitter Fedor Voronkov. A 23-year-old player was the top scorer for Nova Novokuybyshevsk last season. He made his debut for Russia national team in this year’s FIVB Nations League.
