ECH U16 W: Turkey outplay defending champions Italy to win gold medal

Turkey crowned their perfect 2019 CEV U16 Women’s European Championship campaign, in which they remained undefeated (7-0) and lost only one set (in the semifinals against Slovenia), by winning the gold medal in the 2nd ever edition of the tournament. Turkey did it by beating titleholders and also the co-hosts Italy in straight sets in Trieste, partially 25-20, 25-20, and 25-20.

Eczacıbaşı VitrA youth team opposite hitter Pelin Eroktay and VakıfBank youth team outside hitter Aleyna Göçmen top-scored for Turkey with 13 points apiece. The latter served 4 aces and made 4 kill blocks. Sara Bellia, the outside hitter of Fusion Team Volley youth squad, that is competing in the country’s regional championship, was the only player in Italy with double digits (10).

Turkey’s setter Özge Arslanalp, a member of the youth team of Galatasaray HDI Sigorta, was named MVP and Best Setter of the U16 European Champs.

Russia downed Slovenia in 4 sets to claim the bronze medal.
