Italy’s Unet e-work Busto Arsizio staged a huge upset in the 1st leg of the 2021 Women’s Champions League semifinals. Even though they were 2 sets down on the road against Turkey’s VakıfBank İstanbul, the ‘Butterflies’ managed to recover and won the marathon match in the tie-break: 20-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-13, and 15-13. Thus, Busto (finished 5th in Serie A regular season) inflicted only the 2nd defeat overall in all competitions to VakıfBank (regular-season winners in Turkey) this season. Furthermore, several years have passed since Giovanni Guidetti’s team last time lost a duel after having 2-0.
Canadian Alexa Gray led the Serie A club with 22 points today. The Swede Isabelle Haak tallied 27 points for the ‘Yellow-and-Blacks’, while American Michelle Bartsch-Hackley made 72 % reception (25 digs, 1 error, 48 % excellent). The rematch is scheduled for March 24.
A. Carraro Imoco Conegliano dominated Igor Gorgonzola Novara in the 1st leg of the all-Italian semifinal. Just 3 days after the triumph against the same rivals in the final of the national cup, the ‘Panthers’ imposed a convincing straight-set victory, making an important step towards the Super Finals. In the rematch at home, Imoco will only need to take 2 sets to access the final act of the most elite club competition in the Old Continent.
Paola Egonu was the top scorer for the team coached by Daniele Santarelli with 18 points. Monica De Gennaro had 73 % reception (11 digs, 1 error, 36 % excellent). Caterina Bosetti scored 13 points on the losing side.
