Aleksey Verbov is no longer a head coach of Zenit-Kazan, the Russian men’s volleyball club announced.

After the first season on the bench of Zenit-Kazan and also first season ever as the first coach, Aleksey Verbov left the Russian powerhouse.

He spent seven seasons as a libero in Zenit (winning numerous trophies including CEV Champions League and FIVB Club World Championship) and had a chance to occasionally be the playing coach in the last of those seasons. In 2019/20, Verbov took the role of the head coach of the club from the Tatarstan region, replacing legendary expert Vladimir Alekno who became a consultant for health reasons.

Verbov commanded Zenit to win the trophy in the Russian Cup but failed to lead them to the Playoffs of the CEV Champions League, which has never happened to the Kazan side in the club history. Prior to the suspension of the championship due to coronavirus pandemic, Zenit took the second position in the charts of the regular season.

It remains unknown if this means that Alekno will return to the bench or Zenit will seek some other solution.

This was expected considering the worst season Zenit had this year. From the absolute domination at the national and international level, they became average team. If Alekno comes back, Mikhaylov goes back to the opposite spot, and they find one great outside hitter they might be able to form great team again.
