The 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games hosts Colombia made their fans in Barranquilla proud by surpassing the team with the most titles in the history of the men’s volleyball tournament, Cuba, in the semifinal. Colombia prevailed in a five-set thriller that lasted for two hours and 33 minutes and had an error-filled fourth set and breathtaking tie-break – 20-25, 25-11, 20-25, 30-28, 23-21. The second set was rather uncommon for this level of competition due to the fact that one side, in this case Colombia, had a 12-0 lead! Liberman Agámez staged a superb display for Colombia with 36 points! Miguel López made 29 points for Cuba.
In the grand finale, Colombia will face Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico qualified to their fifth straight gold medal encounter in the Central American and Caribbean Games men’s volleyball tournament, eighth overall, as they beat Mexico in the other semifinal by a 3-1 (27-29, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22). Sequiel Sánchez and Maurice Torres led the winning side with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Daniel Vargas scored 22 points for Mexico.
Finalists Puerto Rico and Colombia played each other in the group stage when Puerto Rico took a 3-0 win.
