The work of Social Networks was key in the success of the VIII Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup that took place at the “Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gym." The information about the tournament matches in social networks like Facebook and Twitter attracted thousands of spectators. During the final day almost 4,000 more people visited the venue that had previously hosted an international event more than two decades ago.

Along with the social networks, the coverage of national and local media increased during the semifinals, as well as third place and gold medal matches. TVC Deportes, a national cable network handled the broadcasts for all over Mexico.

Also Televisa and TV Azteca, were present along with The Mexican radio Institute (IMER), Canal 11 of Mexico, Univision and ESPN from USA as well as Grupo Reforma (one of the biggest newspaper groups) Esto, Uno Mas Uno and the National wire service of Notimex, the Mexican Official News Agency.

Some other media outlets like CNN provided a special recap about the tournament and the participation of the Mexican team as host of this competition.

The support of Mexico City Sports Institute, the Benito Juarez Delegation office, as well as the National Sports Commission and Mexican Olympic Committee along with the National Federation played also a special role.

Meanwhile Alternative media and specialized web sites such as Pitlane.mx, “De Zaguero” and Voleibol Mexico gave another point of view about the game to Mexican fans and internet readers. Other spaces such  “La hinchada” and “Fotos de Soco” also shared their interactive experiences with players and fans.

The six-day competition also attracted fans from the surrounding cities and communities of the Mexican capitol such as Morelos, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Queretaro and the State of Mexico. Also a special tribute ceremony dedicated to the 1968 Olympic teams took place during the opening day.

This was the second of three international volleyball events to take place in Mexico in 2013, whose National Federation celebrates also its 80th anniversary after being founded in 1933 by professor Juan Snyder.

Two more events are still scheduled: FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship and the Norceca International Congress, both of them will take place in Baja California.

Social media is becoming increasingly important throughout the FIVB confederations and the FIVB itself which shares news, photos and other pertinent tournament information in its Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and additional social media outlets.
