In an almost two-hour gold medal battle at the 2019 Asian Championship in Seoul (South Korea) against the surprising finalists Thailand, Japan won the continental title for the fifth time, the second time in a row: 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23).

In a replay of the decider from the previous edition of the Asian Championship, Japanese side, whose roster was mainly consisted of the players that won the U20 World Championship a month ago, crowned the campaign in which they lost only one match and recorded 7 wins. More precisely, there were 10 teenagers included in Japan’s squad for this competition. This fact certainly makes this success even more significant.

In the bronze medal match, the host nation defeated record titleholders China (13 gold medals) in straight sets, partially 25-21, 25-20, 25-22, thanks to 29 points from Kim Yeon-Koung.

Just like in the U20 World Champs, Mayu Ishikawa of Japan was named MVP. She also earned one of the two Best Outside Hitter awards.

Individual awards at the 2019 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship:

Best Outside Hitters: Kim Yeon-Koung (KOR), Mayu Ishikawa (JPN)

Best Middle Blockers: Nichika Yamada (JPN), Yang Hanyu (CHN)

Best Opposite Hitter: Haruna Soga (JPN)

Best Setter: Nootsara Tomkom (THA)

Best Libero: Piyanut Pannoy (THA)

MVP: Mayu Ishikawa (JPN)
