The “Volleyroos” achieved a hard-fought win over Chinese Taipei, who also had the opportunity to go to the World Champs in case of winning this encounter, in the last round of Pool B of the Asian Qualifiers – Final Round, at home soil in Canberra. Australia triumphed in straight sets but by being only two points up at the end of each, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23 and will take part in World Championship for the sixth time in a row.
“It was the main goal for the season, it’s a big achievement. This squad has been amazing for the whole season. We’ve fought like lunatics I guess for two and a half months now. It was hairy today, there were a lot of nervous moments, a lot of nervous guys, but they all stepped up in the big points and we stayed with them the whole time,” Australian NT coach Mark Lebedew said after the match against Chinese Taipei.
A berth at the World Champs waits for the two more teams from Asia after Iran, China, Korea, Kazakhstan and Qatar finish their battles in Pool A in Ardabil, Iran (August 10-14).
