On the 2021 Men’s Champions League premiere, Italy’s Itas Trentino raised their heads after trailing 2-0 in sets against the Russian titleholders Lokomotiv Novosibirsk and prevailed in the tie-break in this very hard-fought game of Pool E: 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-2). In accordance with the new format of the competition, Trentino will host a three-day programme in this pool.
Dick Kooy top-scored Trentino with 20 points. The Dutchman Nimir Abdel-Aziz who, just like in recent SuperLega games, played as a setter instead of an opposite hitter (both setters – Giannelli and Sperotto – were unavailable), served 6 aces. Serbian Marko Podraščanin made 4 blocks.
In the other match of Pool E, Germany’s VfB Friedrichshafen downed Czech’s ČEZ Karlovarso in four sets mostly thanks to Linus Weber (21 points, including 5 blocks). The Frenchman Nicolas Maréchal served 4 aces.
