In just a few days, European volleyball is poised to undergo a significant leadership change. The European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) will soon elect a new president, a position that holds immense influence over the direction and future of the sport on the continent. With the election set to take place in Naples on August 24, the volleyball community is buzzing with anticipation as four candidates vie for this prestigious role.

Among the contenders, Croatian Roko Sikirić has emerged as a strong candidate. A former professional volleyball player and Croatian national team member, Sikirić’s extensive experience within the CEV, where he held various operational roles, makes him a formidable candidate. Sikirić is also the first to publicly declare his candidacy and outline his vision for the future of European volleyball.

Sikirić’s campaign centers on depoliticizing the sport, revitalizing competitions, and generating profit through strategic commercialization of marketing and digital rights. His platform resonates with many within the volleyball community, particularly those who feel the sport has stagnated in recent years. Sikirić promises to be a voice for all clubs and federations, aiming to balance their diverse needs while driving growth and innovation.

Another candidate with deep roots in the CEV is Italian Renato Arena, a long-serving member of the organization’s leadership. Arena, known for his close association with the current president, Aleksandar Boričić, represents continuity and stability. His candidacy is backed by those who support the current administration’s approach and achievements.

Poland’s Leszek Leo Wencel is another key contender. A businessman with substantial international experience, Wencel is endorsed by the Polish Volleyball Federation. His campaign centers on blending business expertise with a deep passion for volleyball, offering a new vision for CEV leadership. His priorities include securing sponsorships, ensuring equitable fund distribution, and driving key organizational reforms. He has extensive experience in business and sports, having led companies like Nestlé Polska and initiated sports sponsorships.

Lastly, Danish candidate Eric Adler brings a wealth of experience, having been a pivotal figure in the Danish Volleyball Federation since 1996 and a member of the CEV Board since 2002. Adler’s expertise in organizing major events, such as the 2013 European Championship, adds weight to his candidacy. His platform focuses on maintaining the financial stability of the CEV while pushing for greater inclusivity in the sport.

As the election date approaches, the stakes are high. The 56 national federations that make up the CEV will cast their votes in what promises to be a closely contested race. With the current president’s term coming to an end, the election marks a critical juncture for European volleyball. Whether the sport will continue on its current path or embark on a new direction depends on the outcome of this pivotal vote.

The volleyball community watches with bated breath as these four candidates prepare to present their final arguments. The future of European volleyball rests in their hands, and the decision made on August 24 will shape the sport for years to come.
