3 days to go – WCH 2018 W: Meet Pool C

It’s time to meet Pool C at the FIVB World Championship 2018 in Japan. Let's take a look of the teams and their rosters, who will start their journey from Kobe.

Thailand

Thailand make their fifth appearance in the FIVB World Championship this, looking to better their previous best of 13th place which they have achieved twice; in their 1998 debut and again in 2010. They have never qualified for the Olympic Games, narrowly missing out on the Rio 2016 Olympic Games two years ago.

Their oldest player is Thinkaow Pleumjit who has 34 years while the youngest is Chatchu-on Moksri who still has 18 years.

Team of Thailand for the World Championship: 

Setters: Tomkom Nootsara, Guedpard Pornpun

Opposites: Kanthong Malika, Kokram Pimpichaya

USA

The USA are out to defend their 2014 title, making their 16th appearance this year at the FIVB World Championships. Their 2014 gold, following a 3-1 win over China in the final, was their first in the history of the competition, after two silver and two bronze. 

This year the USA topped the standings of the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League pool play, with a 13-2 record and went on to win the historic title, beating Finals hosts China 3-1, followed by a 3-2 win over Turkey in the final at Nanjing.

Their oldest player is captain Jordan Larson who has 31 years while their youngest player is Sarah Wilhite Parsons who has 23 years.

Team of USA for the World Championship:

Setters: Carli Lloyd, Micha Hancock

Opposites: Karsta Lowe, Kelly Murphy

Receivers: Michelle Bartsch-Hackley, Kim Hill, Jordan Larson, Sarah Wilhite Parsons

Middle blockers: Rachael Adams, Foluke Akinradewo, Tori Dixon, Lauren Gibbemeyer

Russia

The Russian women’s team are the most successful in the history of women’s volleyball. They are the most decorated team in the FIVB World Championship with seven gold medals and this year they will compete in the event for the 17th, having only missed the 1967 competition.

Russia finished fifth in the last edition of the World Championship, after previously winning back-to-back titles, both with 3-2 wins over Brazil in 2006 in Osaka and 2010 in Tokyo.

The oldest player in the team is captain and the first setter Evgenia Startseva who has 29 years while the youngest is Anna Kotikova who has 18 years. 

Team of Russia for the Worled Championship:

Setters: Evgenia Startseva and Tatiana Romanova

Opposites: Nataliya Goncharova and Daria Malygina

Receivers: Irina Voronkova, Ksenia Parubets, Anna Kotikova and Olga Biryukova

Middle blockers: Irina Koroleva, Irina Fetisova, Ekaterina Lyubushkina and Ekaterina Efimova

Liberos: Daria Talysheva and Alla Galkina

 

Korea 

After missing out on qualification in 2014, the Korean team returned this year for their 12th appearance at the World Championship. Until now they won bronze medals at 1967 and 1974 and since then they have not been back on the podium.

Korea won bronze medals in the first two editions of the FIVB World Cup (1973, 1977), as well as at the 1997 FIVB World Grand Prix. They ranked 12th in the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League this year.

Their oldest player is setter Hyo-Hee Lee who has 38 years and she is the oldest player at the tournament while their youngest player is Ho-Young Jung who has 17 years.

Team of Korea for the World Championship

Setters: LEE Hyo-Hee, LEE Na-Yeon

Middle blockers: KIM Su-Ji, YANG Hyo-Jin, PARK Eun-Jin, LEE Ju-Ah

Outside Hitters: KIM Yeon-Koung, PARK Jeong-Ah, LEE Jae-Yeong, LEE So-Young, Oh Ji-Young

Opposite: JUNG Ho-Young

Liberos: NA Hyun-Jung, KIM Hae-Ran

 

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan will play in the FIVB World Championship this year for only the fourth time, after a ninth-place finish in their 1994 debut, 13th in 2006 and 15th last time around in 2014.

The country’s best success to date was gold at the 2016 European League after home-and-away wins over Slovakia in the final, 3-1 in Nitra and 3-0 in Baku. They came close to another medal last year, when they hosted the 2017 European Championship, reaching the semi-finals before losing to the Netherlands in five sets and then defeat in the bronze medal against Turkey.

The oldest player in the team is Natalya Mammadova who has 33 years while the youngest is Krystsina Yagubova who has 22 years.

Team of Azerbaijan for the World Championship:

Setters: Yana Azimova, Krystsina Yagubova, Shafagat Alishanova

Receivers: Odina Aliyeva, Jana Kulan, Yelyzaveta Samadova, Natalya Mammadova

Middle blockers: Olena Hasanova, Aynur Imanova, Ayshan Abdulazimova

Liberos: Iuliia Karimova, Bayaz Aliyeva

Opposites: Polina Rahimova, Anastasiya Gurbanova

 

Trinidad & Tobago

Trinidad & Tobago are the only team amongst the 24 entrants to make their World Championship debut in 2018. It is a truly historic moment for the team, who have never competed in any other world event.

Trinidad & Tobago are ranked 34th in the world.

The Caribbean side finished 31st in their sole FIVB World Grand Prix appearance last year, and have been a strong competitor in nine North and Central America & Caribbean (NORCECA) Championships. Their best finish came in 2013 when they ranked 6th.

Their oldest player in the team is Jalicia Ross-Kydd who has 34 years while the youngest is Kiune Fletcher who has 16 years.

Opposites: Krystle Esdelle, Taija Thomas, Kiune Fletcher
