By recording the fifth successive win at the World Cup and by doing it against the team that also aims to clinch the medal, Russia showed that they did not give up on winning the trophy. The “Zbornaya” swept the Netherlands by a 3-0 (26-25, 25-18, 25-20) in Toyama, practically took away one of the last chances of rivals to interfere into the battle for the gold medal. However, the “Oranje” players still have a chance to finish the round-robin tournament with medals around their necks. As for Russia, they are third in the charts with 7-1 and 19 points, which are only 4 points behind leaders China. There are three more rounds to go. The Dutch team squandered 21-15 lead in the first set and a set point on 24-23. Driven by Nataliya Goncharova (16 points), Russia took control of the rest of the match. Russia will play the second-placed USA in the next round and if they win that match, Russia might skip the North American side in the charts. Lonneke Slöetjes scored 14 points for the Netherlands, who are fourth in the standings with 5-3 and 16 points.

Andrea Drews highlighted in the United States’ clean victory over NORCECA rivals the Dominican Republic in Sapporo, in which they left rivals in single digits in the third set. The opposite hitter poured in 23 points, making an applaudable attack success rate of 62.1%. Gaila González scored 13 for the Caribbean side, including 4 kill blocks. The players coached by Karch Kiraly hold 7-1 in the tournament.

Unbeaten China produced a straight-set win against Kenya, who were unable to break 15-point milestone in any of the sets. The head coach of the Olympic champions Lang Ping gave the chance to young players in the roster to step up today. The world and European champions Serbia, who came to the World Cup without many of their key players, suffered an embarrassing defeat to South Korea (3-1). Argentina’s opposite hitter Lucía Fresco made one of the most impressive scoring outputs in the tournament, so far. She tallied 32 points on as much as 68 spikes (!) in the five-set win of her side against African champions Cameroon. Brazil downed Japan in three sets, still hoping for the place in the podium.
