Argentina defeated Brazil in five sets in a memorable bronze medal match at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics men’s volleyball tournament.
Argentina played at a very high level to defeat its big South American rival Brazil 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-13) in the match for the bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics men’s volleyball tournament. It is the second Olympic medal for Argentine men’s volleyball and is taken 33 years after the first one (Seoul 1988), which was also bronze and also earned against Brazil. The last time Argentina had a chance of winning the medal in the Summer Games prior to Tokyo was in Sydney 2000 when it was denied by Italy. Brazil is out of the Olympic podium in men’s volleyball after four straight editions, interrupting a sequence of medals that began in Athens 2004 and which consisted of two golds and two silvers.
The winning side today had as many as five players in double digits in scoring, led by Facundo Conte (21 points). Augustín Loser’s blocking performance was outstanding (7 of the team’s 17 blocks). Wallace de Souza top-scored ‘Seleção’ with 17 points, including 4 blocks. Thales Hoss had 73.3 % reception (12/15; 1 error).
