Xi’an & Rio — China had double the reason to celebrate on Thursday — a dominant 3-0 sweep over Serbia and the 56th birthday of head coach Vital Heynen. The home team delivered their first VNL win since returning to the tournament, with Ji Daoshuai and Jiang Chuan leading the charge. “I didn’t ask for a win, just a good game,” said a beaming Heynen. “We can be proud.”
Serbia, who had come off a comeback 3-1 victory against Turkiye on Wednesday, couldn’t match China’s composure and efficiency. Luburic and Ivovic once again led Serbia in scoring, but unforced errors proved costly.
Meanwhile, across the globe in Rio de Janeiro, Slovenia kicked off their VNL campaign in style, overpowering Cuba 3-1. Led by captain Tine Urnaut and a quick, modern style of play, the Slovenians dismantled Cuba’s physical game with smart tactics and speed. “We surprised even ourselves,” said libero Jani Kovačič. “This was the volleyball we want to play.”
