The 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Pool C kicked off today in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with Brazil and France starting their campaigns with wins over Greece and Puerto Rico.
Brazil Too Strong for Greece
South American powerhouse Brazil started their quest for a maiden world title with a commanding 3-0 win against Greece (25-18, 25-15, 25-16).
Captain Gabriela “Gabi” Guimarães led by example, scoring 18 points. Júlia Bergmann supported with 15 points, while opposite Kisy Nascimento added 10.
Though outplayed, Greece found hope in 21-year-old opposite Mártha Anthoúli, who topped the scoreboard with 18 points.
France Celebrate Long-Awaited Return
Earlier in the day, France marked their first World Championship appearance since 1974 with 3-1 win against Puerto Rico (25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14).
Iman Ndiaye starred for the French side with 22 points, including five aces, while captain Héléna Cazaute added 21. Despite dropping the third set, France’s balanced play and strong serving carried them over the finish line.
Coach Cesar Hernandez was satisfied with the start:
“We knew there would be nerves, but the players responded well. The first win gives us confidence to face stronger challenges ahead.”
Looking Ahead
With both Brazil and France securing opening victories, anticipation is building for their head-to-head clash on Sunday, which could define the top of Pool C. Meanwhile, Greece and Puerto Rico will battle for their first win earlier the same day.
