Türkiye stamped their authority on Pool E of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship with a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada in Nakhon Ratchasima on Wednesday. The reigning European champions topped the group without dropping a single set and will now face Slovenia in the eighthfinals. Canada advanced in second place and will take on the USA.
The return of veteran captain Eda Erdem energized Türkiye. The 38-year-old middle blocker delivered 13 points, while Melissa Vargas led all scorers with 16, sealing the match with a powerful third-set swing. Dominant at the net, Türkiye outperformed Canada in kills (49–35) and blocks (10–5).
“I’m really happy to be back on court,” Erdem said. “We finished the group stage with three wins, and that gives us great confidence going forward.”
Canada’s Nyadholi Thokbuom stood out with 12 points, but the North Americans couldn’t match Türkiye’s balance and consistency.
In the second Pool E match, Spain ended their campaign with a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Bulgaria. Captain Maria Segura led the way with 17 points, while middle blockers Sofía Varela and Lola Hernández added 16 and 13 points respectively.
“We wanted to return home with a win, and today we proved we can play at this level,” Segura said after the match.
Bulgaria fought hard with Miroslava Paskova scoring 15 points, but they finished winless in the pool. Spain secured third place with four points, while Bulgaria bowed out in fourth.
With pool play complete, the spotlight now shifts to Bangkok, where Türkiye v Slovenia and USA v Canada will open the knockout stage on September 1.
