Italy has made history by winning its first-ever Olympic gold medal in women’s volleyball at the Paris 2024 Games. The Italian team defeated the USA 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) in a commanding final performance.
This victory is a landmark achievement for Italian volleyball, marking their inaugural Olympic gold after seven attempts. The team was flawless throughout the tournament, securing the title with six wins and dropping only one set.
The USA, the defending champions from Tokyo 2020, settled for silver, making it their fifth consecutive Olympic podium appearance. Despite strong performances from Jordan Larson and Jordan Thompson, the Americans could not match Italy’s dominance.
Paola Egonu led Italy with 22 points in the final, supported by Myriam Sylla and Caterina Bosetti with ten and nine points respectively. Italy’s superior play was evident in their stats, outperforming the USA in kills (45 to 35), blocks (11 to 0), and aces (7 to 3).
With this victory, Italy joins an elite group of Olympic champions, including the former USSR, China, Cuba, Brazil, Japan, and the USA, marking a significant milestone in their volleyball history.
