The 32-year-old middle blocker Simón appeared in Cuba National Team jersey again after nine years and marked his return with 10 points (8 in the attack and 2 kill blocks) in the match against Canada at the 2019 NORCECA Champions Cup in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA (August 22-25). Recall that he and two more players made an agreement with the Cuban Volleyball Federation on their return to the national team.
Cuba beat Canada by a 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-11) to successfully open the tournament whose winners will advance to the NORCECA Olympic Qualifier, next January.
Besides Cuba and Canada, two more teams take part in the Men’s NORCECA Champions Cup – the USA and Puerto Rico. Knowing that the United States have assured the spot in the 2020 Tokyo Games in both competitions by winning one of the six tournaments of the FIVB International Qualifier, the second-placed teams will get tickets for the qualifier in January in case the USA win the tournament.
Female national teams play the tournament at the same time and in the same location as men. The national teams of the United States, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Canada take part in it.
