It was a scrappy beginning to the match with both teams making errors, but Bulgaria captain Nikolay Penchev eventually got his team going with a few points and Bulgaria converted a small lead at the technical timeout into a 21-13 set win.
Bulgaria made a strong start to the second set and forced the Dominican Republic into an early timeout. Receiver Branimir Grozdanov’s attacking and blocking was important early and Bulgaria took the set 21-11.
Bulgaria controlled the final set to win 21-14 and complete the victory. Grozdanov finished as Bulgaria’s top scorer (9) despite not playing the final set, and captain Penchev (8), middle blocker Ventsislav Ragin (7) and opposite Jani Jeliazkov (7) also contributed points.
The Dominican Republic conceded 26 points in errors to their opponents and couldn’t make enough impact with their net attacks, accumulating only 16 points from spikes.
Bulgaria will defend their unbeaten record against Tunisia on day three, while the Dominican Republic play the last match of the day against Argentina.
