The Drawing of Lots will determine the teams that will play against each other for the coveted FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship title, a tournament which is scheduled to take place from August 30 to September 21 in Poland.
In addition to the Drawing of Lots and announcement of the host cities, highlights include the unveiling of the World Championship trophy and full details of the opening ceremony and match that will launch the most anticipated event of the 2014 volleyball season.
The event will be live streamed on www.fivb.org and the trophy will be on display for members of the media following the ceremony.
To date 16 out of 24 teams have qualified for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship following the completion of the European round of qualifications in early January 3 to 5, with only the African Confederation (three vacancies) and NORCECA (five vacancies) still to complete their qualification process for the World Championship tournament.
On the African continent, the year kicks off in February with three tournaments in Kenya (February 5 to 11), Cameroon (February 12 to 18) and Tunisia (March 2 to 8) each featuring five teams with one ticket per tournament on offer to Poland.
Countries in the NORCECA confederation must wait the longest to discover their fate, with four qualifying tournaments (each with four teams) scheduled for May and June in Cuba (May 12 to 18), Canada (May 13 to 19), USA (May 13 to 19), Puerto Rico (May 20 to 26). The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014 NORCECA playoff will take place either in Mexico or Puerto Rico from July 7 to 13. By the end of this, the last five teams will have booked their place at the World Championships.
The men’s tournament will be followed by the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014, which will take place from September 23 to October 12.
The FIVB Volleyball World Championships are a quadrennial event. In the men’s competition, Brazil will be looking to add a fourth consecutive win to their hat-trick of back-to-back titles in 2002, 2006 and 2010.
