Whoever thought that the 2018/19 Superliga playoff final series will be only a matter of formality made a huge mistake in judgment. The second seed Kuzbass scored a straight-set win over the reigning champions and No.1 seed Zenit in Game 1, on the road, partially 27-25, 25-21, 25-22.
Many factors were against Kuzbass today: the fact that this is their first-ever Superliga finals compared to the 10th of Zenit and the fact that Kazan side beat them three times this season in as many matches (twice in the regular season and once in the national Cup semifinals).
Led by ex-Zenit member Viktor Poletaev, who scored 19 points, the team at whose helm is the new head coach of Russia national team, the Finnish Tuomas Sammelvuo, took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series that will be continued already tomorrow, again in Kazan. Three players top-scored for Zenit with the same number of points – 11: Maksim Mikhaylov, American Matthew Anderson and Frenchman Earvin Ngapeth.
2018/19 Superliga playoff finals – Game 1:
(1) Zenit Kazan – (2) Kuzbass Kemerovo 0-3 (25-27, 21-25, 22-25), series 0-1
