The All-Russian Volleyball Federation (VFV) commented on the decision of the South Korean Volleyball Federation (KVA) to file a complaint against an assistant coach of Russia Women’s national team Sergio Busato.

The gesture of one of Russia national team coaches, Busato, at the end of the match against South Korea in the FIVB International Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was assessed by the KVA as racist. Thus, they filed a complaint to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), requesting a punishment for an Italian expert.

“We have no information yet. Knowing Sergio Busato, this was in no way a racist gesture. It meant, as it seems to me, that the road to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics opened before us. But that isn’t a racist gesture, one hundred percent,“ Irina Zolotova, the press secretary of the VFV, said to News.ru.

The coach whose gesture caused all this commotion, Busato, also gave his statement to the media in regard to this. He said that he only celebrated the team’s progression to the Tokyo Olympics and in no way wanted to offend South Korea national team.

“I didn’t want to offend anyone. I’m very surprised that my gesture was considered offensive. I just celebrated going to the Olympics, which will be held in Japan. At that moment I didn’t address the South Korean team at all. I don’t understand why my gesture was called racist. At that moment, we were all happy on the court, I was also happy and thus celebrated our going to Tokyo,“ Busato told RIA Novosti and apologized to the South Korean team, the South Korean Volleyball Federation and the fans, stressing that he was not interpreted correctly.
