On a day when they showed both power and savvy, the European champions Russia relied on the combination of serve and block to put aside the Asian monarchs Iran in straight sets 25-19, 25-22, 25-19.
The Russians outblocked the Iranians 19-3 with Maxim Troynin and Victor Poletaev recording six and five blocks respectively. The winners held a 5-3 advantage in aces and totaled 40 spikes to 25 by the losers.
Poletaev topped Russia with 17 points while Dmitry Volkov added 15 and Alexander Goncharov chipped in with 10 points. Iran’s Akbar Valaei had 10 points.
